When I married Steven almost 6 years ago, I also married into an amazing family. His mother, Sheryl, is my best friend and his father, Don, is an amazing man that set a wonderful example for my husband, including everything from simply being human to being an excellent law enforcement officer.
In 1994, Don was diagnosed with heart disease.
In 1998, he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
On top of that, he was a law enforcement officer (since retired) with a lot of responsibility, which caused a lot of stress and strain on his body. Throw in a few heart attacks and stents over the years and his body was a recipe for disaster.
At the beginning of 2017, Don was told by his doctor that he needed 6 coronary artery bypass grafts.
Instead of following his doctor's recommendations, he gave himself 6 months to reverse his condition without traditional medical treatment.
His wife, Sheryl, who has always been very supportive of Don through his many facets of life (Kinda hard not to be supportive as a law enforcement spouse!), dove into the Mastering Diabetes program with him even though she has never dealt with diabetes personally.
The first step was to change their eating lifestyle. Sheryl has chosen to eat well ever since she battled cancer many years ago, but Don, not so much. Being in law enforcement causes a lot of stress and demands a ton of mental capacity, so the last thing a lot of officers want to do is worry about food. While Sheryl would make healthy meals for him to take to work, he would still run through the drive through or eat what other officers brought to work - in most circumstances that was crap food. A lot of the problem was that back in the 90s, most people didn't know any better! But now that people are learning to think for themselves and not trust the government so much, we have better options!
The great part about their diet change was that they decided to focus on what they could eat, not what they couldn't. Over time, Sheryl started experimenting with certain ingredients to mimic some of their old favorites. Her experiments weren't always successful (it's hard to bake without oil!), but their nutrition never suffered and that's what matters.
Their diet is whole food, plant based, high carb, with no added oil. According to Sheryl, the Insta Pot has been a Godsend!
Sheryl and Don both put in so much amazing effort to treat Don's broken body by using what God has already made for us. Sometimes all it takes is a little push in the right direction and a lot of faith.
Don has successfully reversed his Type 2 Diabetes, avoided the need for 6 bypasses, and lost 50 pounds! And he did it all by treating food as medicine.
The team over at Mastering Diabetes sent out a newsletter today and featured Don's amazing story. I hope you'll check it out for yourself and get some encouragement for whatever journey you're currently facing.
"Reversing type 2 diabetes is actually easier than you think. In this video Don shares his story of how he is in the process of reversing type 2 diabetes and he already reversed heart disease. His doctor told him he needed to have 6 bypasses. Instead of doing that, he went on a diet to reverse type 2 diabetes. This ended up reversing insulin resistance and allowing him to make dramatic improvements and mange type 2 diabetes without medication." - Mastering Diabetes
It goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway... I am so incredibly proud of Don and Sheryl for altering their lives for the better. We're happy to have Don around for many years to come!
Bonus! If you watch until the end of the video, you'll get to see Steven and I in one of Don's "before" pictures. This picture was taken in 2015 when Steven received his Texas Peace Officer's badge.
